On the eighth floor, the Assayag provided something few residential buildings did: communal laundries, supplied with water at the very top of the building.
This is what remains. A concrete basin beneath its window, wide enough for two people. A washboard cast into the slab — the ribs are not an added fitting, they are part of the basin, like the small soap recess beside them. Nothing was installed: it was cast with the rest.
Around it, the rooms are empty today, with terracotta tiles and concrete slabs underfoot and doors aligned along the corridor.
What these rooms say about the life of the building, the path of the laundry from the kitchens and the water carried to the roof: “The eighth-floor laundries”.
